I've got a quick update on what we've been working on in the last week or so. There haven't been any code/feature changes, but we've been designing/looking to the future of CodeSpells. Specifically in the context of a story mode of gameplay.
We'd like to make a fun gameplay loop involving some of these mechanics:
I won't spoil the prologue of the story we came up with, but what do you think about some of those mechanics?
I would love these in Codespells. Maybe game saves could come with that update too? I don't want to explore and get loot only to have to leave then restart all over again.
I'm excited for it!
Great suggestion. We'll definitely add something like that to save progress.
I'm not sure about the farming part. Do you mean monster farming for leveling?
If that is so I don't like the idea, it often gets repetitive very fast :/
I would prefer some boss monsters that are very hard to kill x)
All of those sound great except for farming. If you do implement it, please don't make it something necessary!
All those sound wonderful as long as there are items for you to collect, as well as something you can do with them, like using items as if they are spell materials in order to reduce casting time or selling them for money in order to buy better materials later .
Or perhaps those materials increase spell duration when used, or can be used instead of mana for some spells....
Please include some significant grinding capabilities. The game needs leveling that improves hp, mana, spell power, and some talent trees that focus on blocky functions for some cool extras to be released by developers like the rock golem , or some other really cool code combos that will kickstart some of us coders that don't have a doctorate. 8^)
I'll give my 2 cents ^^
Puzzles : Of course! Spells are made because you need them. Puzzles are a great way to "force" the player to think and create new spells ^^
Creature Collecting/Protecting/Destroying : Would be great! Taming creatures, teaching them spells, etc? I say YES! Creatures fights in Multiplayer would look good, too ^^
Looting and Gathering : as someone said, if this helped with spells, like reducing some element cost, like a "-2 fire cost on Explode functionnality" or a "-0.2 water/s on Create Water", it would greatly enhance the game. This way, someone playing very "watery" or "earthy" could play better, or discover new elements. We all caught items we didn't want. A fire mage getting only water stuff? Try to test that low-cost element! Or yeah, even objects like "Mana banks", that you put somewhere and they provide mana to surrounding spells ^^
Farming : I guess this is plants farming? As there already is an environment for this? Then I say yes again, as this would lead to a more "relaxed" gameplay.
Exploring : What? Why? How? I don't understand. What would be the benefits? Isn't Codespells already about exploring? ^^
I agree with TheInventor : if some of these features are implemented, you'll want to save your game. Imagine spending hours creating a farm out of a desert, and now it's back to a desert? Imagine you made a strong bond with a croaker, named it, made it shoot lasers (because I can), and now, he's gone... Or you found a super rare stuff, and you don't have it anymore... I think any of these additions would greatly benefit from saving game ^^ Not to mention that doing the same puzzles everytime to get where you were would be a pain.
@kriisko What would you say about getting community spells? If the "browse" function is unavailable in Story Mode, and you could find some really interesting spells? I don't think there should be unlockable code. This means that if you get somewhere hard, you'll just grind, instead of making a spell ^^ "Having a hard time? Try an element you're not used to." [Magicka loading screen] Although I do agree that having a way to increase these limits would be great.
What about buffs? For example, you charge a 100 earth mana spell which doubles your earth mana rate for 2 minutes? Or a not-too-overpowered way of boosting your capabilities?
And, I wrote a book again. A bit too enthusiastic, sorry ^^
